Four strategic pillars to build an AI learning ecosystem The two parties will engage in in-depth collaboration across four strategic pillars: 1. Deployment of Google’s leading AI tools: The School will roll out the Gemini Enterprise for Education platform to all staff and students, enhancing T&L efficiency and personalised learning environment. 2. Comprehensive digital transformation in AI education: Establishing a Google Cloud AI lab to support student-led innovation projects, and creating the HKU SPACE x Google AI Prompt Library to provide systematic AI learning resources. 3. Programme and curriculum development: The School currently offers over 70 AI-related courses. Moving forward, both parties will collaborate on AI-centric courses and curriculum integration to stay current with industry trends. 4. Talent development: Google experts will deliver professional training and certification courses for students. Both parties will also launch joint promotional initiatives, including the School’s participation in Google’s flagship event. Furthermore, Mr Michael Yung, Strategic Advisor of Google Cloud, served as a keynote speaker at the School’s Open SPACE, marking the knowledge exchange between the two parties. AI is a partner, not a replacement On the MoU signing day, Professor Lee was featured as a guest speaker at the Fireside Chat of Google Cloud Leaders Connect 2026. He shared how the School fosters an innovative culture and cultivates AI talent, demonstrating its leadership in AI education. Professor Lee emphasised that the School believes AI is a partner in enhancing the learning experience, rather than a substitute for humans. The School envisions integrating AI with human intelligence: with AI handling data analytical tasks, whilst humans take the lead in solving complex problems and making ethical judgements. Professor Lee revealed that the School is exploring the use of AI agents to drive “decentralisation of academic expertise” which will provide students with an interactive, intelligent learning experience 24 hours a day. To mark this historic moment, Google Cloud has invited the School to participate in a film production by its Transform Studio, sharing the School’s success story in educational innovation. As Professor Lee stated in the video’s closing remarks: “The School is creating a new way of empowering learners in the age of AI.” This represents not only our vision for the future of education, but also our unwavering commitment to lifelong learners.

A Decade Together: The Director and You A Decade Together: The Director and You At the School’s 2026 Long Service Awards Ceremony, a heartwarming scene unfolded. Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE who is normally on stage presenting the awards, stood as a recipient himself this year. Receiving the accolade from Professor Ian Holliday, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the moment beautifully marked his decade of walking hand-in-hand with the School. Life's most unforgettable scenery Rewinding to July 2015, Professor Lee had just assumed office as Director of the School. In his inaugural interview at the time, rather than dwelling on management theories, he shared a touching story. He recalled, "When my grandmother was on her deathbed, she had lost most of her memory, yet she still remembered the happy times we spent together." This made him realise that sharing joyful moments with people is truly life's most unforgettable scenery. This deep value placed on "people" has set the compassionate tone for his governance over the past ten years. He believes education is not merely about passing on knowledge, but about human interaction, collaboration, and companionship. In HKU SPACE’s lifelong learning family, he acts not just as a decision-maker, but as a fellow traveler braving the wind and waves alongside all staff and learners.

The success of the School lies in its people The path over the last decade has never been short of storms. Buffeted by economic cycles, an ageing population, and COVID-19, the education sector has faced challenge after challenge. Yet, with wisdom and steady leadership, Professor Lee has not only guided the School through the storms but also achieved remarkable growth. The School has become the largest provider in Hong Kong for sub-degree programmes (enrolling over 17,000 students annually), Continuing Education Fund (CEF) courses (offering over 1,800 courses), and transnational education programmes (serving around 3,000 students). The School serves close to 60,000 learners each year and has accumulated over 3.4 million course enrolments since its founding. Despite these achievements, Professor Lee candidly stated in his Long Service Awards speech: "Numbers are not the part that moves me the most." "The part that moves me is what those numbers represent," he explained, "individual learners with busy lives, family responsibilities and career pressures—who choose to study with us. And school leavers disappointed with the DSE results come to us with a hope to do better, and many do." To him, the transformation of learners reflect the true meaning of education, while the countless colleagues working hard behind the scenes form the core that allows the School to stride steadily forward and continue innovating. Achievement is a shared medal Standing at this new milestone of his tenth anniversary of service, he remarked: "This award may carry my name, but it reflects the people who have supported me and worked alongside me—through difficult times, and times when we had to find a way forward together." Professor Lee emphasised that the most precious element is not the award itself, but the collective sense of achievement that all colleagues share after striving together toward a common goal.

Celebrating Glorious Years: Honouring Long-Serving Staff 10 Celebrating Glorious Years: Honouring Long-Serving Staff To recognise the loyalty and dedication of staff members, the School hosted its annual Long Service Awards Ceremony on 11 June 2026 at the HKU SPACE Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College (HPSHCC). Following HKU SPACE’s expanded role in the management of HPSHCC, the two institutions joined forces once again to host this memorable event, paying tributes to veteran staff and celebrating the team’s strong cohesion. The ceremony commenced with opening addresses by Professor Ian Holliday, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HKU SPACE, and Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, followed by the presentation of Long Service Awards to recipients from both institutions. The event concluded on a warm note with award representatives from both sides sharing heartfelt anecdotes of their journeys alongside the School and the College over the years. This year, a total of 56 colleagues with 10, 15, 20, or 25 years of service received this honour. Notably, this milestone also marks Professor Lee’s tenth year of service to the School; his personal participation as an award recipient added a further layer of significance to the ceremony. The School established the Long Service Awards Scheme in April 2012 to express gratitude to staff for their long-term dedication and to foster a deeper sense of belonging. Every award recipient represents the School’s most valuable asset and serves as the cornerstone of its ongoing success. The School once again extends its deepest gratitude to all the award recipients.
