HKU SPACE Annual Report 2021/22

Sustainability The School has long been exercising green practices including minimising additional provision of air-conditioning and lighting, grouping classes on Sundays or public holidays to one major learning centre for electricity efficiency and gradually abandoning the use of biodegradable umbrella wraps, etc. Green procurement so that goods are acquired with minimal adverse environmental impacts has been in force. Other environmental practices on waste reduction and adoption of the 4R concept to reduce, reuse, recycle and replace have also been implemented, for example reducing types of printed stationery, operating recycling programmes for paper, plastic and other recycling materials with provision of recycle bins in common areas, promoting use of double-side printing and e-versions of teaching / office handouts to minimise paper consumption. With concerted efforts, the total paper consumption of the School in 202122 dropped considerably by 23.3% while electricity consumption fell by 2.6% compared to that of 2020-21. Moreover, conservation begins with education. HKU SPACE has been offering professional and quality education in different programmes / courses relating to sustainability, such as the Certificate in Sustainable Communities and the Certificate for Module (Philosophy and Practice of Sustainability in Architecture). Recently, the School has also launched a number of ESG courses, e.g. Certificate for Module (Wealth Accumulation Series: ESG Investing), Certificate for Module (Leadership in Applied ESG and Sustainability), and Certificate for Module (Applied ESG and Intelligent Technologies), etc., aiming to meet the growing demand from the learning public on the concepts, factors and investment opportunities of ESG; the challenges, advantages and application of ESG and sustainability management. The College of Life Sciences of Technology (CLST) has started to develop ESG programmes, some of which were targeted at IT professionals with professional training needs on data analysis for ESG. Three Certificate for Module programmes were offered in collaboration with Allied Environmental Consultants Ltd. The College also launched the Certificate for Module (Corporate Climate Competence and Carbon Management) with Carbon Care Asia. The School has been a supporting partner of the CarbonCare® Label Scheme since 2019. The scheme has been run since 2011. It recognises the sustainability efforts of businesses and organisations in their actions to tackle climate change and achieve carbon reduction/ neutrality status by Measuring, Reducing and Offsetting (MRO) their carbon footprints. HKU SPACE will continue to call for the collaborative efforts and support from students, teachers and colleagues to help promulgate and participate in green practices and sustainability issues. DIRECTOR’S REVIEW OF THE YEAR院長回顧 30
