03 The Third International Conference on Quality in Self-financed Higher Education ‘Connecting Local and Global’ on 22 February 2025 brought together leaders from overseas and local education circles as guest speakers to share their experiences and prospects for transnational education, attracting participants both physically and virtually across several time zones to discuss the future directions of educational development. Opening remarks and visionary keynote speeches Professor Ian Holliday, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) of The University of Hong Kong and Chairman of the HKU SPACE Board of Directors, inaugurated the conference. He welcomed participants from universities, institutions, and professions worldwide, emphasising the importance of exchanging experience, building capacity, and expanding knowledge in self-financed and transnational education. The keynote speeches featured two distinguished speakers — Professor Stamenka Uvalić-Trumbić, Former Head of the Higher Education Section (UNESCO) and Former Senior Adviser for International Affairs to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (USA), and Professor Grahame Bilbow, Co-Founder and Director of Grange Education. Professor Uvalić-Trumbić discussed how local developments meet global standards for quality and recognition in higher education. This was followed by the presentation of Professor Bilbow on creating the new HKU SPACE Teaching Fellowship Scheme, a local educational initiative aligned with global educational standards. Engaging round table discussion and parallel sessions A round table discussion chaired by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, addressed the prospects for selffinanced tertiary education in the Greater Bay Area. Esteemed speakers, including Ir Dr Alex Chan, Chairman of the Committee on Self-financing Post-secondary Education, Mr Albert Chow, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, and Professor Ronald Chung, Chairman of the Federation for Self-financing Tertiary Education, shared their insights on recent trends, regulatory frameworks, and opportunities for Hong Kong's self-financing tertiary institutions. In the afternoon, seven parallel sessions took place, featuring experts, officials, and educators from local and overseas universities. These sessions covered various aspects of transnational and selffinanced education, including innovative teaching, quality assurance issues, and the transnational education experience in Hong Kong. Technological innovations in education The advancement of technology has extensively transformed traditional teaching and learning models. The E-Learning Team showcased four innovative projects at the Conference: a VR application for dietitian training that offers immersive clinical scenarios, a Metaverse application for learning Japanese language through interactive virtual environments, advanced online learning resources utiliszing Generative AI for dynamic language practice and storytelling, and a comprehensive Video Library to support teaching and staff development with a wide range of multimedia resources. Recognise outstanding teachers The Outstanding Teacher Awards 2024 were also presented by Professor William K.M. Lee at the conference. Thirteen recipients received awards, with certificates to be sent directly to those who were not present.

05 The partnership between HKU SPACE and the University of London (UoL) has endured for 60 years. The Department of Extra-Mural Studies of HKU (HKU SPACE’s predecessor) established the first law degree programme in partnership with UoL in 1963/64, expanding into disciplines such as Economics, Management, Finance, Accounting, and Computer Science over time. UoL is renowned for its rigorous academic standards. The programmes offered in Hong Kong mirror those provided to students in London in terms of quality teaching and degree recognition upon programme completion. Notably, while local universities follow a four-year curriculum, undergraduates at UoL admitted through DSE can complete their studies in just three years, with degree holders having the opportunity to acquire a second degree in as little as two years. This flexibility proves advantageous for working professionals seeking further education due to the reduced time and tuition costs. This year, the Presentation Ceremony was successfully held on 12 January, with Mr Alistair Jarvis CBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UoL, travelling to Hong Kong to confer the degrees on over 50 graduates. Mr Jarvis remarked, “UoL and HKU SPACE share a mutual commitment to providing high-quality higher education to our students. This partnership allows students to study at HKU SPACE, an institution renowned for its exceptional environment and esteemed faculties, while earning a globally recognised credential from UoL.” Professor William K.M. LEE, Director of HKU SPACE, added, “Our collaboration with UoL is bidirectional. Through reciprocal visits, they gain insights into Hong Kong's economy, society, and future developmental trajectory, enabling the design of programme frameworks and content that enhance programme relevance.” As the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance (Cap. 320) undergoes review, both institutions will explore expanded cooperation to offer diverse teaching modes and distinctive, competitive programmes that cater to students' lifelong learning aspirations at different life stages. Graduates' Experience Sharing Mr Suen Cheuk Pong, a 2024 Bachelor of Science in Banking and Finance First Class Honours graduate, and Mr Chan Wai Lun, a 2024 Bachelor of Laws (LLB) graduate, have both received the HKU SPACE Outstanding Academic Achievement Award with distinction. Working in the financial sector, Mr Suen recognises the importance of maintaining a competitive edge in the job market. He believes that UoL's international reputation for academic excellence not only provides him with a qualification from a globally esteemed institution but also offers invaluable experience in managing his work, equipping him effectively for professional development. In 2021, Mr Chan decided to embark on a new career path and pursue an LLB. During his studies, he encountered numerous challenges but was fortunate to receive timely support and beneficial feedback in mock examinations from his professors, helping him develop the practical skills required for his examinations. Currently studying a one-year full-time PCLL programme at the University of Hong Kong, he looks forward to entering the legal profession upon graduation and starting on a new chapter in his career.
HKU SPACE and Po Leung Kuk announced the signing of the second joint venture agreement for the development of the HKU SPACE Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College (HPSHCC), marking a significant milestone in their partnership that began in 2006. This renewed partnership, set to run for 30 years from 2025 to 2055, underscores our shared commitment to educational excellent and innovation. The Signing Ceremony of the Joint Venture Agreement took place at HPSHCC on 10 March 2025. The agreement was signed by Professor Ian Holliday, Chairman of the Board of Directors, HKU SPACE and VicePresident and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning), The University of Hong Kong, and Mrs Helena Tung Pong, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Po Leung Kuk. It was witnessed by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE and College Principal, HPSHCC, and Mr Timothy Chan, CEO, Po Leung Kuk. Building on the successes of our first collaboration, this agreement aims to elevate HPSHCC to new heights by combining the unique strengths of both organisations - academic rigor from HKU SPACE and practical industry insights from Po Leung Kuk. Together, we will create synergies that maximise the impact on our students and the broader community. A core goal of this renewed partnership is to contribute significantly to Hong Kong’s development as an education hub in the region. By attracting talent from across the region and fostering a vibrant culture of innovation, research, and entrepreneurship, we aim to shape a brighter future for education and beyond. Over 200 teachers, students and parents gathered to celebrate the accomplishments of the awardees. In his opening address, Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, stated, “The Community College is dedicated to serving as a platform for students to pursue their academic aspirations and explore the myriad opportunities in their personal and professional journeys.” On 17 December 2024, HKU SPACE International College (IC) held its annual Scholarship cum Bursaries Presentation Ceremony. This remarkable event celebrated the academic achievements and contributions of outstanding IC students, with a special focus on acknowledging their dedication and hard work. The ceremony commenced with a welcome speech by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE. This was followed by the presentation of various scholarships and awards. Lastly, Professor Lee appointed the Student Ambassadors for the 2024/25 academic year, entrusting them with the task of actively upholding the College's values and promoting campus culture. 香港大學附屬學院校園活動速遞 HKU SPACE Community College Campus Activities Update HKU SPACE Community College has been committed to creating a pleasant and warm campus life for students through diverse activities. This year, the College successfully organised the “Lucky Draw”, the thrilling "Throw for Win, Match and Get" challenge and “Free Snacks Day” event, which brought laughter and vitality to all campuses. At the end of February, the College hosted the highly popular "Hong Kong Traditional Snacks" event across campuses, offering students traditional snacks like egg waffles, popcorn, and dragon beard candy. This allowed everyone to savour the classic tastes of Hong Kong, experience the local food culture, and encourage interactions and exchanges among each other. Building on February's traditional snack fever, the College will be hosting "Free Ice Cream Day" across campuses soon! Students can enjoy complimentary speciality ice creams. Moreover, Acting College Principal, Professor Sonny Lo, will host Tea Gatherings at various campuses, where students can interact casually with him. 校友會精彩活動登場 HKU SPACE ALUMNI Event Review 校友會精彩活動登場 HKU SPACE ALUMNI Event Review 10 第20屆會員周年大會 20th Annual General Meeting 學院校友會第20屆會員周年大會已於2024年 12月4日順利舉行。2024-2025年度校友會委 員名單順利誕生。 新任會長區永熙先生表示為了進一步提升校友 會活動的質素，將積極尋找失去聯繫的校友， 透過各種活 動和網絡宣 傳，讓畢業 生重新接收 校友會資 訊，重建彼 此的關係。 建造工程校友會成立 Inauguration of the Building Engineering Alumni Association 2024年8月29日，建造工程校友會舉行成立 典禮，會長吳偉雄工程師分享組織致力為會 員建立交流的平台，提升會員在建造工程方 面的知識和專業技能。典禮並設有座談會， 分享建造業專才的培養與發展。 On 29 August 2024, the Building Engineering Alumni Association held its inauguration ceremony. Mr Henry Ng, President of the Association, highlighted its goal of providing a platform for members to communicate, and improving members' knowledge and professional skills in building and construction engineering. The ceremony included a seminar on professional training and development in the industry. 意大利語言及文化校友會成立 Inception of Italian Language and Culture Alumni Society 另一校友組織 ─ 意大利語言及文化校友會亦 於2024年11月16日舉行成立典禮，會長林 文鵬先生分享組織旨在推廣意大利語言及文 化，為對意大利語言及文化有興趣的人士提 供支援，並舉辦相關活動。典禮上，香港的 演奏家和歌唱家演唱多首意大利名曲，增添 了藝術魅力。 Another notable addition, the Italian Language and Culture Alumni Society, was inaugurated on 16 November 2024. President Ben Lam shared the Society's objectives of promoting Italian language and culture, providing support to enthusiasts who are interested in Italian language and culture and organising related activities. The inauguration featured live performances of Italian classics by local musicians and singers, adding to the artistic charm of the event. 參觀香港國際機場 Visit to Hong Kong International Airport 校友會於2025年1月17日舉辦了香港國際機 場參觀活動，由導賞員帶領校友參觀機場禁 區內最具特色的行人天橋「天際走廊」，透過 玻璃幕牆及地板觀賞飛機停機坪和第三跑道， 並特別安排參觀員工俱樂部，讓校友深入認 識機場的運作。 On 17 January 2025, the HKU SPACE ALUMNI organised a tour of the Hong Kong International Airport. The alumni were guided through the Sky Bridge, the most prominent pedestrian walkway in the restricted area of the airport, enjoying a panoramic view of the aircraft apron and the third runway through glass walls and floors. A visit to the HKIA Staff Club also provided insights into airport operations. The 20th Annual General Meeting of the HKU SPACE ALUMNI took place on 4 December 2024, and the 2024-2025 Alumni Council was successfully formed. To further improve the quality of alumni activities, the newly appointed President, Mr William Au Weng-hei, expressed his commitment to actively reconnect with lost alumni.
