About 100 guests, including members of the School’s Board of Directors, various Committees and the Alumni Council, management and faculty staff, attended and witnessed this historical moment for the School. At the ceremony, Professor Ian Holliday, Chairman of the HKU SPACE Board of Directors, and Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, delivered speeches respectively. Professor Ian Holliday mentioned that the School paid great attention to geographical location when looking for suitable places for new campuses - the sites of all learning centres must have convenient transportation links, to be able to meet the needs of different people. “The acquisition of the new campus aims to develop and improve the School’s teaching and learning facilities, and at the same time, to fulfill our core mission of providing lifelong learning opportunities for the community,” he said. Professor William K.M. Lee said, “The new Kowloon West Campus embraces sustainable development in its design concept to ensure that the School will provide a modern campus while fulfilling its corporate environmental responsibility. The new campus is equipped with the most advanced teaching and learning facilities. For example, special rooms are set up to meet the learning needs of wine and coffee tasting in modern society, together with computer labs, providing a more diverse learning environment for full-time and part-time students.” After the ceremony, the guests had lunch together. During the lunch, Ms Susanna Poon, a part-time teacher of the School’s wine programmes and a Champagne Chevalier of the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne (OCC), was invited to introduce the wine tasting techniques, and gave tips on how to pair red and white wine with different foods; and Mr Keith Tse, a part-time coffee teacher and professional barista who has won the Hong Kong Latte Art Championship several times, performed specialty coffee latte art, and brewed specialty coffee for the guests to taste. These lunchtime events showcased the professionalism and excellent teaching quality of the School’s wine and coffee programmes. The professional skills and knowledge of the two teachers were eye-opening. Everyone was full of praise for their wonderful performance, and the atmosphere was relaxed and lively. The special room is also equipped with a cleaner room with the latest model of a heat-recycle dish washer to meet the fierce demand of cleaned wine glasses and kitchen utensils. The cleaner room layout meets the heavy demand with an ergonomic design for the health benefits of our staff. The coffee and wine programmes currently offered by the School have all reached the professional level, and have been certified by the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) and Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) respectively. Some graduates have already become professional instructors in those fields. The School’s part-time coffee teacher, Mr Keith Tse, is an Authorized Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Trainer. He holds the ‘Brewing Professional’ and ‘Barista Skills Professional’ from Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), and has won the Hong Kong Latte Art Championship 4 times. Keith loves and enjoys coffee and he wishes to share his knowledge and professional techniques with more like-minded people. The School’s wine teacher, Ms. Susanna Poon, is a Certified WSET Educator. Her passion in wine has led her to various wine qualifications such as Champagne Expert (Distinction), Italian Wine Maestro, and Champagne Chevalier of the Ordre des Coteaux de Champagne (OCC) from its Hong Kong branch. As a former student of the School’s wine programmes, Susanna is now appointed as the judge of Wine Luxe International Awards. Moreover, as part of the Coach Team for the HKU SPACE Wine Team, she led our students to win The Left Bank Bordeaux Cup Blind Tasting Competition at Chateau Lafite in 2019. The Student Common Rooms also have very ingenious designs – the extensive use of glass partitions allows plenty of natural light to penetrate into the interior, creating brighter, more dynamic, lively and energetic space; the adoption of warm tone colours create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, bringing out a “home sweet home” feeling for the students, and promotes a sense of belonging; the indoor seating arrangement and space can be adjusted flexibly, allowing different types of student activities of different sizes. In line with the School’s strategy of developing e-learning, the classrooms at the new Kowloon West Campus are featured with the latest technology and equipment to support oncampus and off-campus teaching at the same time; echo-free classrooms are ideal for discussion and Q&A sessions; digital interactive whiteboards are in place to help achieve easy illustration and more efficient teaching; touch interface is available to control audio, video, lighting and the delivery of signals, which can support wireless teaching and presentation. In addition, given the demand and trends in learning wine and coffee tasting in modern society, the new Kowloon West Campus has a special room with an area of 2,000 square feet. The room is specially designed to be a professional-grade “life kitchen” with Arclinea, a famous Italian brand kitchen cabinets. The aesthetics of Arclinea combine the Italian design with better-performing equipment and more sophisticated and durable finishes. It has wine cellars, espresso machines, coffee grinders, ice making machines, glass chiller, cooking stoves, and other advanced equipment, simulating a reallife environment in a café or wine bar. Its interior design adopts simple light and clean tone as backdrop, with dark and metallic tone tables and chairs as highlight for the whole space. The setting of the special room is to complement the School’s plan in developing more food & beverage related programmes. For those who aspire to become professional sommeliers, baristas, or just want to learn dining etiquette and wine & food pairing, learning in such a modern kitchen will definitely help them acquire knowledge and master skills more effectively.
The launch of Microcredentials sets a new education milestone 06 The launch of Microcredentials sets a new education milestone In April 2023, HKU SPACE officially launched Microcredentials, setting a new milestone for continuing education and creating lifelong learning advantages for those who have learning aspirations for further studies. Professional short courses for leisure and culture, covering a wide range of topics The School has always paid great attention to the development of education, exploring lifelong learning opportunities for citizens. In the first phase in April this year, the School launched nearly 150 Microcredential courses, covering more than 30 themes, including: Architectural Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Aviation and Business Aviation, Business Management, Chinese Medicine, Finance and Investment, Supply Chain and Logistics, Digital Transformation, Chinese Tea Culture, Medical and Healthcare, and Sustainability, etc. In order to keep pace with changing times and to meet social needs, Microcredential topics will be added gradually, providing learners with more choices. Many of the Microcredentials are CEF eligible so that students can apply for financial support for their tuition fees under the Continuing Education Fund (CEF) of the HK Government. With low learning costs, Microcredentials are suitable for anyone who wants to have career advancement, increase earning potential, upgrade skills, change professions, or even just to have fun and pursue interests. Below are some of the key Microcredentials (certificate for module) that the School will launch soon. More courses can be found at www.hkuspace.hku.hk/microcredentials. Customise your own learning pace and get certified Microcredentials are individualised learning programmes – the contents are skill-based and professionally-oriented, and the study plans can be made based on the student’s personal pace, time and interests. These courses are short and credit-based. Although they do not confer any qualifications themselves, students may accumulate credits from them to earn a certificate or diploma. Microcredentials are an emerging worldwide trend that meet the needs of students in the 21st century. Microcredentials have three main features - stackable credits, high flexibility and personalisation. Through these streamlined short-term courses, students can have more flexible learning models and gradually achieve recognised academic qualifications according to their own plans. Stackable credits: Students may accumulate credits from Microcredentials to earn a certificate or diploma and, depending on the subjects, be awarded the title of Certificate/ Diploma in Professional Practice or Certificate/ Diploma in General Studies. High flexibility: Most Microcredentials are short courses of about 30 contact hours (though a few are longer), usually 6, 9 or 12 credits. These credits are normally valid over a 5-year period. Students can design the learning schedule that suits them best. Personalisation: Students can choose courses that best meet their personal goals, professional needs, and preferences, and create their personal educational mind maps.

Global educational experts commit to the new era of Transnational Education Self-financed higher education in Hong Kong is an important provider of quality continuing and professional education opportunities for learners, both part-time for working adults and full-time for school leavers and subdegree holders. In addition to local awards, the availability of transnational education (TNE) programmes has been important in increasing the variety of offerings and the international recognition of the qualifications awarded. Due to continuous change in the demand for transnational education, the College hosted the second International Conference on Quality and Self-financed Higher Education ‘Connecting Local and Global’ on 11 March 2023, inviting leaders from overseas and local education circles as guest speakers to share their experience of and prospects for transnational education which attracted over 200 participants both physically and virtually across several time zones. 09 Education Board of Directors inaugurated the conference and welcomed ‘all of the participants from different universities, institutions, professions and different parts of the world who are participating to exchange experiences, build capacity and expand their knowledge in the field of self-financed and transnational education’. Experience Sharing from Distinguished Overseas Keynote Speakers Unfortunately, the Former Head of Higher Education Section (UNESCO) and Former Senior Adviser for International Affairs to the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (USA), Professor Stamenka Uvalić-Trumbić, could not join us because of a family bereavement. The other keynote speaker, Professor Wendy Thomson CBE, Vice-Chancellor of University of London, talked about changing approaches to quality in higher education and shared her experience in offering diversified programmes. Insights into Local Educational Practices During the round-table discussion chaired by Professor William K.M. Lee, Director of HKU SPACE, each of the five local and internationally distinguished speakers addressed different aspects of the topic ‘Cap 320 and its Implementation in Hong Kong’. For instance, Mr Esmond Lee, Deputy Secretary for Education of Education Bureau, talked about the unified regulatory framework under the revamped post-secondary colleges ordinance (Cap. 320). Mr Albert Chow, Executive Director of Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, spoke from the perspective of a quality assurance (QA) agency and described the development of institutional review standards being in line with the Cap. 320 amendments and implementation. Professor Ronald Chung, Dean of the School of Continuing Education of Hong Kong Baptist University, talked about how the selffinancing education sector may be maintained with minimum intervention amidst regulatory measures and government support, while Dr Kim Mak, President of the Caritas Institute of Higher Education & Caritas Bianchi College of Careers, spoke of the healthy development of the self-financing postsecondary education sector in Hong Kong. Professor Peter Yuen, Professor and Dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Education of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, delivered a speech about quality issues in the post-secondary education sector and the Cap. 320 revision. In the afternoon, six parallel sessions took place with distinguished experts, officials, and educators from the local and overseas universities discussing the various aspects of transnational and selffinanced education and teaching and learning covering topics such as innovative teaching, policy landscape pertaining to transnational education, simulations in teaching practices, quality assurance issues in transnational and selffinanced programmes, and transnational education experience in Hong Kong. Making the best use of technology to enhance learning efficiency The advancement and development of technology have extensively transformed traditional teaching and learning models. In light of the popularity of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies, educators have started to explore the use of these technological innovations to draw students’ attention and increase the engagement of students. Since 2016, HKU SPACE has started to develop VR applications to enhance teaching and learning experiences in our courses for various fields. The conference displayed the results of one such innovative project entitled ‘Air Cargo Screening and Warehouse Management Virtual Reality application’. The project obtained funding from the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) of the Education Bureau. The VR contents enabling multiple users to participate in a simulated environment were developed to enhance the learning experience of students by practising a series of warehouse outbound shipment operations in the Supply Chain Logistics and Transport disciplines. The School’s e-learning unit organised a demonstration of those activities throughout the Conference. Lastly, the School would like to extend our appreciation to our sponsor, Ms Maisy Ho, BBS, for her generous donation for the development of the Maisy Ho Centre for Teaching and Learning to enhance the quality of teaching and learning and for the Conference as well. We were delighted that Ms Ho was able to attend and present the Outstanding Teachers Awards 2022 to 12 recipients.
