Although a section on ESG is not required for Companies Limited by Guarantee, the Board resolved in 2021 that the Annual Report should nevertheless formally include ESG in its Report from 2021/22 onwards. Environment and Sustainability In 2024°25, the School continued to strengthen its sustainability e orts through infrastructure upgrades and resource management. A major milestone was the completion of three new Learning Centres— the Kowloon East (Kingston) Learning Centre (KEK), Sheung Shui Learning Centre (SSLC), and Kingston East (Exchange) Learning Centre (KEE)—each designed with environmentally friendly features as a priority and aligned with HKU Estates Oªice ESG guidelines. KEK locates at Kingston International Centre which received BEAM Plus Platinum certi ication, featuring 40% greenery coverage and energy-ef icient designs that reduce carbon emissions by over 30%. Their curtain wall systems help lower solar heat gain and airconditioning consumption. SSLC and KEE also adopted greenery and wooden inishes to create a calming atmosphere and reduce reliance on arti icial lighting. Motion sensors and timer controls were installed to support energy conservation. Additionally, both centres introduced the 'Way Finder' digital display system for checking class schedules and providing directional guidance, supporting paper reduction. Paper reduction remained a key focus. The School enhanced its use of digital tools, including the e-Prospectus and digital name cards. The Institutional Advancement Unit has successfully collaborated with Colleges and Units to adopt green printing and production practices. This initiative, driven by a strategic shift towards digital iles, resulted in a 20% reduction in printing quantities, from 164 to 130 jobs between 2023–24 and 2024–25, effectively minimising material waste and environmental impact. This will not (initially at least) replace paper parchments, though it may do so eventually. The Microcredential Scheme already awards digital badges and these have proved popular – some 4,568 microcredential participants were recorded in 2024/25. Most of these are CEF eligible and the School o ers some 40% in total of all CEF eligible courses. In December 2024, HKU SPACE introduced its new mobile app, designed to enrich the student experience. This app serves as a userfriendly platform enabling students to stay informed about the School’s latest updates and to access comprehensive information about the School’s programmes and activities. Another irst for 2024/25 was the initiation of the Teaching Fellowship Scheme a highly regarded international award of the UK HEA Fellowship administered by Advance HE. During the year the Joint Venture College with our partner, Po Leung Kuk, HKU SPACE Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College (HPSHCC) continued to do well with a total of over 3,000 full-time students at the Causeway Bay Campus. Our Greater Management Role continued to prosper and the two partners signed a new Joint Venture Agreement to run until 2055 at a ceremony on 10 March 2025.
