HKU SPACE

003 William K. M. Lee 李經文 Director 院長 Message from the Director 院長序言 HKU SPACE has always been committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching and learning, as well as the provision of a quality and comfortable learning environment for our students. After a series of renovations, some of our learning centres, including United Learning Centre, Kowloon East Campus, and Island East Campus, were revamped at the end of last year. We hope that our teachers and students will enjoy a new, vibrant and contemporary campus life. In line with HKU’s commitment to Generative AI, the School has integrated AI into its curricula, incorporating AI elements into teaching and syllabi starting from the 2023/24 academic year. This strategic approach aims to equip students with the necessary guidance to utilise AI effectively and ethically while also ensuring that they develop a solid proficiency in AI tools that align with the expectations of future employers. In January 2024, the School also launched the “HKU SPACE AI Hub”, which embodied our goal to embrace technology in teaching and learning. The AI Hub is a platform that provides access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence technologies and resources, designed to support all staff, teachers and students whether part-time or full-time alike within the School in their pursuit of learning, experimentation, and innovation with AI. This platform brings together the latest AI tools such as ChatGPT, generative AI, and big data analytics, consolidating them into a single website, our SOUL 3.0 learning platform, accessible to all staff, teachers, and students of the School. The e-Learning Team will provide comprehensive training and support to users to maximise the benefits of the platform. The HKU SPACE Alumni Association was inaugurated in 2004 to maintain and foster a supportive and mutually beneficial relationship with the alumni and the School. Up to now, there are over 371,000 alumni members. This year, the Alumni Association celebrated its 20th anniversary in May. As well as a series of talks held from last October to April this year, there was a Gala Dinner held on 18 May at HKCEC, which served as an occasion to reconnect with old friends, beloved teachers, and fellow alumni. Over 200 guests attended the dinner. All proceeds were allocated to support the HKU SPACE Scholarship and Bursary Fund to benefit our full-time students. As the School initiative to attract students from the GBA, HKU SPACE established the Academy for Leadership Enhancement and Development (LEAD) in January 2023. Throughout the past year, LEAD has successfully delivered high-quality and innovative programmes to senior executives and corporations from Mainland China in Hong Kong, including Hong Kongbased training, study tours to Hong Kong, and international study tours. Also, since April this year, our website is now supported by Simplified Chinese language, which can facilitate students from the GBA in looking for information on the website. The School has again won the “Sing Tao Excellent Services Brand Award – Best Continuing Education Services Provider” for the 17th consecutive year, and the “Platinum Trustmark Award” in the Continuing Education Category at the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand Awards for the 11th consecutive year. These external recognitions of our efforts are much appreciated. As part of the University, the School was audited by the UGC QAC during its 3rd Audit Cycle of the publicly funded universities. That report is expected to be published in June 2024. In anticipation of the government’s initiative to reform Cap 320, the Post Secondary Colleges Ordinance, the University will establish HKU Centennial College (HKUCC) to merge the operation of the HKU SPACE Community College with Centennial College to provide a robust new institution which will develop a suite of degree programmes, especially in the areas of allied health and of data science. The School will continue to be involved in providing management services to the new entity as well as playing a greater management role in its joint venture with Po Leung Kuk, the HKU SPACE Po Leung Kuk Stanley Ho Community College (HPSHCC) as it too comes under the reformed Cap 320.
