Students develop their ability to identify and correct grammar errors with teacher feedback and consistent grammar review. HK$2,000 6 weeks English The Fundamentals of Persuasive Business Writing Programme Code: BENG9145 S 2975 5880 jenna.ho@hkuspace.hku.hk Persuasive business writing aims to convince readers to take a particular action or adopt a particular point of view. It is a way of communicating an idea in a manner that is compelling and convincing to readers. Writers use techniques such as evidence-based arguments, emotional appeals, and conversational tone to persuade readers to decide in favour of the writer’s position. Persuasive writing is often used in marketing, advertising, public relations, fundraising, and other business communications where the writer wants to influence the readers’ opinion or behaviour. This 18-hour short course will enlighten students’ understanding of the discourse structures and word choice in persuasive business writing. Applicants shall: • hold a Certificate in Advanced Business English or above awarded within the HKU system through HKU SPACE; or • Cambridge Linguaskill General / Business test score 160 or above. * Equivalent qualifications will be considered on individual merit. To embrace the upsurged industry, a better command of English is key to success. This programme aims to provide an opportunity for practitioners to practise and gain extra knowledge in serving their English-speaking guests. The trainer will showcase vocabulary to describe tourist attractions, demonstrate interactions with clients and empower you with phrases and vocabulary for welcoming your guests. These courses are open to all who are interested in English literature or literary studies. For students who are preparing themselves for internationally-recognised programmes in English / English literature, participation in these short courses offers them exposures to the aesthetics of literature, nurtures their literary sentiment, and stimulates their criticism on literary works and other genres. A series of short literary courses which are open to all but they will be of particular interest to part-time students who need more exposure and input to English Literature. Reading Drama Programme Code: ELIT9089 From classical Greek drama to contemporary theatre, the stage has always been an integral part of the human experience. The course looks at selective moments in the history of drama in which certain playwrights benefited fully from the history of the genre and yet departed so radically from that history. Exploring the content as well as the form of their dramatic works provides key insights into some of the most important societal and cultural issues of both past and present. Applicants should have a good reading knowledge of English, a willingness to participate in discussion and, above all, an interest in literature. HK$3,800 7 weeks Reading Short Stories Programme Code: ELIT9100 This course explores the idea of storytelling through reading the works of some of the short story’s most prominent writers. It deals with fundamental questions like: Why do people need to tell, read, write and listen to fictional stories? By examining the aesthetics as well as the politics of storytelling, the course aims at shedding some light on the different themes generated by narration and revealing the void that lies beneath man’s sense of identity. Applicants should have a good reading knowledge of English, a willingness to participate in discussion and, above all, an interest in literature. HK$2,800 5 weeks
